SLAM Line Guard Rail System

Amazon RME — AMM Internship | Summer 2026

Problem

The SLAM line conveyor system at TPA4-SFC had multiple sections where existing factory guard rails bent outward from repeated package impacts, creating unguarded gaps. Packages traveling along the belt shift laterally and fall from the conveyor onto the floor — requiring manual retrieval by RME technicians and causing delivery estimate accuracy (DEA) misses.

The targeted section measured 125 inches on SLAM Line 501, but 9 SLAM lines across the facility had similar gap locations — making this a systemic issue.

Concept Selection

Selected ✓
ABS on 4040 Aluminum Extrusion
71 / 75 (94.7%)

Highest structural performance, excellent serviceability (two-bolt removal), uses existing mounting interface with zero permanent modification, $198 material cost.

Runner-Up
ABS on 2040 Aluminum Extrusion
57 / 75

Adequate for lighter loads but failed worst-case deflection criteria on the unsupported 76.5-inch span.

Solution

4040 6063-T5 aluminum extrusion with ABS thermoplastic panels. Bolts directly into existing L-brackets via M8 button head screws and 40-series drop-in T-nuts. The entire assembly can be removed by removing two bolts with an Allen wrench, maintaining full service access. Total material cost: $198.

Components: 4040 aluminum extrusion, ABS panels, 3D-printed spacers, M8 bolts + T-nuts, 3D-printed panel aligner brackets, linear connectors.
